Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur, observed on the 10th day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei following Rosh Hashanah, is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. It marks the culmination of the Ten Days of Repentance, a sacred period devoted to introspection, forgiveness, and renewal. The day is dedicated to atonement for sins committed over the past year—both those affecting one’s relationship with others and with God. Traditions include fasting from sunset to sunset, with no food or drink for approximately 25 hours. People gather in synagogues for solemn services, which feature prayers such as Kol Nidre at the start and Neilah at the end. The blowing of the shofar closes the fast, symbolizing spiritual closure, and many communities conclude the day with a “break fast” meal shared with loved ones.
