This designation reflects our effort to recognize both the contributions of Italian Americans and the history and legacy of Indigenous peoples. It replaces the former “Columbus Day” label and is observed on the second Monday in October.

In educational settings, it also offers an opportunity to explore the complex history surrounding early encounters between Indigenous peoples and European settlers, encouraging students to think critically about historical narratives and cultural perspectives.
